Frequently asked questions

Who is behind SYNAPSIA?

SYNAPSIA was founded in 2011 by Rébecca Michelot, a GIA-certified gemologist (Graduate Gemologist and A.J.P.). She sits on the board of the Swiss Gemmological Society and chairs the Swiss chapter of the GIA Alumni.

Where are you based and how do I book an appointment?

I see clients by appointment only, at A-One Business Center, Z.A. La Pièce 1 – A5, 1180 Rolle, Switzerland. I also travel throughout the Lake Geneva region, to your home or to your bank’s safe-deposit vault, to examine your gemstones and jewelry discreetly. To book an appointment: +41 (0)22 362 03 38 or info@synapsia.ch.

Do you appraise jewelry and gemstones?

Yes: for insurance, inheritance, estate division or sale. I identify the stone, assess its quality and provide a reasoned valuation. I also issue the replacement value certificate required by insurers.

How can I tell if my stone is natural, synthetic or treated?

A gemmological examination identifies the stone and detects many treatments. For important stones, I recommend a report from a recognised laboratory (SSEF, GRS, Gübelin, GIA) and handle the submission and follow-up.

Why invest in precious stones?

They are tangible, compact, discreet and transferable assets that help diversify your wealth. For investment, SYNAPSIA selects only natural, untreated and unheated stones with a laboratory report. As with any investment, no return is guaranteed.

Which stones do you recommend for investment?

Mainly the “Big 4”: ruby, sapphire, emerald and diamond, in rare qualities. The choice depends on your budget and time horizon; I guide you from selection to purchase.

Are your diamonds certified?

Yes: every diamond from 0.20 ct comes with a GIA report, and its number is laser-inscribed on the girdle.

How does bespoke jewelry work, and how long does it take?

First meeting, choice of stone, sketch, 3D rendering, then manufacture by master jewellers. Allow about four weeks of manufacture once the design is approved. We work in 18-carat gold or platinum.

Can I use ethical gold?

Yes: on request, your piece can be made in Fairtrade gold or “Ecological Gold”, 100% recycled and processed to Swiss standards.

Can I have an old or family piece redesigned?

Absolutely. Stones from an old piece can be removed and reset in a new design, keeping all their sentimental value.

Do you buy gemstones or jewelry?

Yes, I buy and sell precious stones. After examining your piece, I make a transparent offer, which you are free to accept or decline.

What is my birthstone?

January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June moonstone and pearl, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October tourmaline and opal, November citrine and topaz, December tanzanite.
